Seminar or Conference Presentation
- The benefits of Social Media
Platforms in the 21st Century.
Fifty years ago people seldom used
the telephone, wrote letters on
paper, and saw television as a
luxury. Fifty years ago most human
beings spoke to less than two
hundred people in their lifetimes.
Today communication is quick, cheap,
versatile and had worldwide
capabilities. Children are
introduced to digital media in the
crib, and people everywhere can
broadcast themselves to millions
using a smart phone.
Is this a good thing?
Are communities suffering or getting
better? Are we choosing machines
over people? Are we losing the
ability to talk and build
relationships, or are we creating
capacities to touch lives and
strengthen relationships? Do social
media platforms cheapen the value of
human relationships, or elevate the
visibility of human need and amplify
the call for social justice?
In this one hour session, Mindie
Burgoyne dispels the fear that
social media platforms are making us
stupid and more self focused. She
makes a case for the huge impact
they've had on the world for the
good by giving the common individual
a platform for having his or her
voice instantly heard around the
world.
During the session she will
highlight the Big five platforms -
Facebnook, LinkedIn, Twitter,
YouTube and blogging with live
demonstrations of each.
