The meaning of
some words in Celtic Spirituality
Turas - devotional journey
where pilgrims move, usually in a
clockwise direction, stopping for
prayer at stations or sites related
to a saint. At each site there is
usually a particular reflection,
then a prayer or series of prayers.
The stations of the cross in the
catholic church follow the pattern
of a Turas.
Clooties - strips of cloth
left behind in devotion. A pilgrim
or petitioner would leave a token
piece of clothing- generally
belonging to the person in need of
healing. It was usually hung on a
bush or a tree, so that the healing
power of the well could act upon it.
These pieces of cloth eventually
became known as 'clooties' meaning
'cloth.'
