Dorchester
County has some of the most haunted sites in Maryland.
Many
will of those sites associated with hauntings and
ghostly tales of the dead will be included in Mindie Burgoyne’s
Dorchester County Ghost Tour. Burgoyne’s successful book,
Haunted Eastern
Shore drew so much interest from ghost
hunters and ghost-story lovers that she has agreed
–at the request of her readers - to do several tours
on the Eastern Shore, highlighting some of the sites
from her book.
This tour will feature several sites
from the book:
Shoal Creek Manor (once stood where
the Cambridge Wastewater Treatment Plant now stands)
Greenbrier
Swamp - haunt of the infamous Big Lizz
apparition reportedly seen my many who visited the
swamp - some never returned
Suicide Bridge near
Secretary
Richardson Maritime Museum
Lower Dorchester - Great Marsh Bridge,
Hoopers Island, Fishing Creek and Bucktown
The tour begins with guests meeting at the
City of Cambridge Council Chambers (located between
the library and the old fire house) where Mindie Burgoyne will give
a short presentation about sites on the tour. “I
like to include more history than spookiness or
sensationalism” Burgoyne states. “I’d rather give
the historic background on the site itself, then
offer a little bit about the legends and haunted
tales associated it. And then add, if possible, what
people say today about the site being haunted or
being host to unexplained events.” After the
presentation, guests will take a short walking tour
through Cambridge, then board the bus and drive
through some of the most beautiful countryside on
the East Coast. This drive will pass many
sites believed to be haunted - or associated with
haunted tales - including Greenbrier swamp and the
sites mentioned above in Lower Dorchester. At
each of the haunted sites where Burgoyne will offer
commentary. Guests will not leave the bus or tour
sites on foot. The bus will return to the
Cambridge by 5 pm.
Mindie Burgoyne has been able to attract
close to 4000 fans to her
Facebook Fan Page for Haunted Eastern Shore. She
attributes the interest in the ghost tours and the
unexpected success of the book (first printing sold
out in five weeks) to her ability to build up the
fan base through social media. She sees the spin-off
successes, like the ghost tours as a result of
enthusiastic fans being able to interact with each
other on a topic they’re crazy about. “Fans have
been organizing their own tours to the sites
mentioned in the book, and I’ve had several requests
to guide ghost tours, and the first tour we did in
Crisfield was so successful, we've added
Dorchester."
The Dorchester tour is being co-sponsored by the
City of Cambridge. Cost per person is $25 and
advanced registration is required. Seating is
limited to forty people, and nearly half the spots
are already sold.
